Energy, security... Europe wants to get closer to Algiers

news-detail

After a meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on March 13, the country’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, praised Algeria saying “we know that we can count on Algeria as a reliable partner and it has been in difficult times.”

Algiers is Africa’s largest exporter of natural gas. In an effort to diversify their supplies to reduce their dependence on Russian hydrocarbons, several European countries – namely Italy - have turned to Algerian gas, with about “90% of exports going to Europe.” According to Borell, the European Union (EU) wishes to develop this partnership "by looking to the future, giving priority to European investments in the renewable energy sector".

On trade relations between the EU and Algeria, he said that both sides can “do better” and that a solution should be found first, including “the barriers [Algeria] has introduced since June 2022 to trade with Spain.” In early June, Algiers suspended a cooperation treaty with Spain in response to Madrid’s decision to back Morocco’s plan over Western Sahara.
