Djanet: Meddahi calls for local traditional crafts to be promoted

Promoting Saharan Tourism and Crafts: The Ministry of Tourism's Strategy in Algeria

During her visit to Djanet, the Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Mme Meddahi, reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to promoting handicrafts as a key lever for Saharan tourism. The creation of permanent sales outlets and marketing points along tourist routes is a priority for the department. This initiative aims to promote local craft products and boost tourism in regions rich in intangible heritage.

The Minister stressed the importance of supporting artisans to facilitate their participation in national and international exhibitions. The aim is to support the sale of craft products while helping to make Djanet a top tourist destination.

Ms Meddahi also announced measures to increase Djanet's hotel accommodations, which currently comprises five hotels offering 513 beds. Ecotourism projects, such as the 90-bed “Djorf Amoud” campsite, are being encouraged to attract adventure-seekers and promote sustainable tourism.

Women's involvement in the craft industry was also highlighted, by supporting local initiatives and encouraging the transmission of know-how to younger generations through training workshops.
