The first national conference dedicated to intellectual property was organized on Monday by the American Chamber of Commerce in Algeria, according to a statement from the organizers released today. The event was attended by Dr. Redha Belkacemi, representing Mr. Ali Aoun, Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Madame Elizabeth Moore Aubin, Ambassador of the United States to Algeria, Professor Kamel Senhadji, President of the National Agency for Health Security, Mr. Abdelhafid Bakhouche, Director General of Customs, Mr. Abdelhafid Belmehdi, Director General of INAPI, Mr. Mohamed Saleck AHMED ETHMANE, Office Director of WIPO, and Dr. Doria Oughlis, President of AmCham.
"Intellectual Property is at the heart of AmCham's priorities, especially in the Health sector, and this conference marks an important milestone in efforts to strengthen measures for protecting innovation in support of economic performance and scientific and technological development in Algeria. It brought together key public institutions as well as members of academic societies in the country, aiming to engage all stakeholders around this crucial issue," the statement reads.
The program of the meeting consisted of a series of "speeches, interventions, and debates led by experts and decision-makers present, who addressed the state of Intellectual Property in Algeria, its regulation, and the legal aspects involved. Each session was followed by an interactive exchange that allowed participants to share their views, experiences, and recommendations."
This conference was a unique opportunity "to bring together key players in the field of Intellectual Property, share best practices internationally, and strengthen cooperation in this vital area for the country's economic development."
According to the same source, "intellectual property is crucial for promoting and protecting innovation and encouraging economic growth; it is a catalyst for economic development and social and cultural progress. Its impact also extends to strategic sectors such as hydrocarbons, startups, the pharmaceutical industry, and many others."
During the conference, discussions focused on "the impact of intellectual property on the pharmaceutical industry. Drugs, the result of lengthy and costly research, represent significant investments for pharmaceutical companies, which is why patent protection is essential to enable them to continue innovating, developing new treatments, and ensuring access to them for public health in Algeria."
In conclusion, "this national conference on intellectual property reminded us that it is everyone's responsibility to mobilize to further strengthen the legal and institutional framework for intellectual property, to raise awareness among economic actors of its importance, and to combat counterfeiting in order to make Algeria a favorable destination for foreign investment and industrial and technological development," stated Dr. Doria Oughlis, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Algeria, on the sidelines of the conference.
