Combating erosion and desertification: Protecting agricultural land

New farms have been set through a regularization process in the form of concessions initiated by public authorities, enhancing the State's private domain, securing the rights of agricultural investors, and optimizing land use, particularly in the context of agricultural development projects.

Since the 1970s, Algeria, aware of these challenges, has undertaken several projects to combat desertification, including the Green Dam, relaunched in 2023, and targeted programs such as the PPDRI and the PP-LCD. The steppe regions, in particular, are a priority due to their ecological fragility and their strategic role between the fertile North and the Sahara.

Despite protective legislation, the reality on the ground remains marked by deforestation, uncontrolled urbanization, and anthropogenic pressure. To meet current challenges, public authorities are focusing on crop diversification, converting low-yield land, reforestation, and biotechnological advances to improve plant resilience.
