Despite the ban in Algeria on the possession and mining of cryptocurrencies since July (Article 6 bis of Law 25-10), they continue to be used by criminal organisations for illicit capital transfers. The Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice, Mohamed Regaz, has emphasised the need to reinforce surveillance tools to deal with this evolving threat. A five-day technical training course, organised together with the United States, aims to enhance the national capacity to identify cryptocurrency transactions, seize funds and utilise digital data as legal evidence. This training brings together judges, police officers, financial analysts and representatives of the Bank of Algeria. US Ambassador Elizabeth Moore Aubin praised Algeria's commitment to strengthening its expertise in combating financial crime. Mr Regaz also called for deeper judicial cooperation with the United States with a view to establishing a lasting strategic partnership. Finally, he recalled that recent legislative reforms, notably Law 05-01, respond to FATF recommendations to address issues related to virtual currencies.
