Cereal seeds: Algeria achieves self-sufficiency and saves $450 million a year

Efforts to develop this sector appear to be continuing, since a strategic plan has been drawn up by a multi-sectoral committee made up mainly of teacher-researchers and experts from the departments of higher education, agriculture, industry, energy, transport and hydraulics.

The recently unveiled plan comprises three strategic areas that address three main concerns in the sector. These are how to improve cereal production, how to improve seed quality, and how to reduce the environmental impact of cereal production until self-sufficiency is achieved.

The strategic development plan outlines 17 operational objectives with a multitude of actions to be carried out between October 2023 and June 2028, as the Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research noted last September at a meeting attended by three members of the government.
