Sonatrach: Three major projects to make Algeria a petrochemical export hub

The CEO of the Sonatrach group, Rachid Hachichi, emphasized on Tuesday evening in Arzew (Oran province) that ongoing investments in the petrochemical sector reflect Algeria's desire to transition from being an importer to an exporter of several strategic products.

During a visit to the Arzew industrial zone, Mr Hachichi presented three major projects included in President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's program, aiming to reduce imports, strengthen domestic production, and develop exports.

1. MTBE production unit in Arzew: This essential component for unleaded gasoline is currently under construction, with a progress rate of 74%. Commissioning is scheduled for early 2026, with a capacity of 200,000 tons per year, covering domestic needs and allowing for the export of surplus.

2. New gasoline production unit in Arzew: The construction contract will be signed shortly. This unit will bring national capacity to 4.9 million tons per year, ensuring self-sufficiency and exports.

3. LAB production unit in Skikda: This product, used in detergents, is currently imported entirely. The new unit will enable local demand to be met, encourage the creation of national industries, and promote exports.

These projects are part of a national economic diversification strategy, promotion of local resources, and strengthening of Algeria's position in the international petrochemical sector.
