The integrated phosphate megaproject in Algeria, currently in the “competitive feed” study phase, is nearing implementation. This project, led by Sonatrach and Sonarem, aims to develop the fertilizer industry, with a focus on international partnerships. Rachid Hachichi met with Ahmed El Hoshy, the OCI Group's executive chairman, at the Gastech forum in Milan to discuss joint projects. OCI, the European leader in ammonia and fertilizer production, could thus seize the opportunity to invest in the rapidly expanding Algerian market.

The integrated phosphate project aims to produce 6 million tons of fertilizer per year, including phosphate and nitrogen fertilizers, ammonia, and urea. It is based on reserves of 2 billion tons of phosphate and plans to extract nearly 1 billion tons. The project will span three sites: Bled El Hadba for raw phosphate, Ouled El Keberit for the processing plant, and a railway line leading to the port of Annaba for export.

This strategic project for Algeria will not only enable the country to position itself on the global fertilizer market but also to meet growing local demand and support industrial development, particularly in the production of lithium-ion batteries, a project supported by Professor Karim Zaghib.
