With its
maritime capital, scientific potential, and already existing maritime and
coastal infrastructure, Algeria’s 2,148km-long coastline offers considerable
potential for the development of the blue economy. With this, the fields remain
open for investment and innovation in Algeria in the sectors of marine
biotechnology, sustainable aquaculture, ecological tourism, mining activities,
services and knowledge production. With funding from the European Union,
Algeria adopted in 2021 its National Blue Economy Strategy (SNEB 2030) and
updated its National Strategy for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (SN GIZC
2030). The SNEB provides the vision and guiding principles that will guide the
government, its partners and civil society towards 2030. Thus was born the Blue
Economy - Fisheries and Aquaculture Program, funded by the European Union and
whose main partner is the Ministry of Fisheries and Fisheries Production, whose
primary objective is to contribute to the sustainable development of the blue
economy in Algeria in coherence with the SNEB. In conclusion, the researchers
and experts participating in the first hackathon organized in the province of
Annaba, agreed that ‘’ to take better account of the blue economy in an era of
climate challenges, we need to invest in the protection of marine spaces,
oceans and seas, for an optimal preservation of its resources and of its entire
ecosystem.”
