Date cultivation, the main vocation of the local
population, is practiced on an area of more than 38,000 hectares in the wilayas
of Touggourt and El Meghaier, constituting more than 85% of the total
agricultural area.
The two wilayas have about three million palm
trees that produce different varieties of dates, with 70% of the production
going to Deglet Nour, while the rest of the production is spread over the other
varieties, including El Ghers (date paste) and Degla Beida (white date).
The various development programs put in place by
the State, as part of support and development plans for this strategic sector,
have contributed to strengthening the yield of the date harvest in Oued Righ
region, both quantitatively and qualitatively.
Production in the past harvesting season
amounted to more than 2 million quintals, with 1,042,711 quintals (qx) in the
Wilaya of Touggourt and 1,018,400 qx in the Wilaya of El Meghaier, according to
data from the sector’s services.
The dynamics of the date sector, in addition to
the increased interest and demand for this product in national and
international markets, have led to the emergence of numerous promising
experiments and projects in the packaging and processing of dates and their
derivatives.
As such, the wilayas of Touggourt and El
Meghaier have no less than 23 micro-enterprises active in date-processing
industries and 17 economic operators in the export sector.
Trade services in the two wilayas recorded the
export of more than 7,500 tons of dates (Deglet Nour) in 2022 to several
states, including Senegal, Niger and Mauritania, as well as to certain
countries in the Middle East.
