Having experienced major movements of various kinds, the port of Oran recorded results for the past year that were considered more satisfactory, albeit with a slight decline, estimated at 5%. Mohamed Djaoued Fasla, adviser to the Chairman and CEO of EPO, reports that a total volume of 10,112,151 tonnes of various goods was handled during 2023, compared with 10,695,159 tonnes in 2022. Whether imports or exports, the same official pointed out that "these goods represent products of all kinds".
The same source pointed out that last year "the same port company saw a significant increase in the movement of containers".
"This increase was of the order of 21%", it stated, pointing out that "the port of Oran handled no fewer than 246,682 containers, compared with 203,294 recorded in 2022". "The gross weight of goods transported reached 1,469,172 tonnes, compared with 1,285,818 tonnes in 2022", he added. Referring to the overall volume of liquid bulk goods handled during the same period by the port of Oran and the same company, the same official revealed an increase of 20% in 2023 compared with the previous year.
"In 2023, this volume was of the order of 159,174 tonnes", he also indicated, adding that "the products exported consist of vegetable oils, mainly soya". Turning to the volume of various activities, or imports and exports, the same source reported a positive annual balance, with an increase of 11%, on an overall volume of 2,740,308 tonnes recorded in 2023, compared with 2,464,870 recorded in 2022".
Imports, on the other hand, showed a negative deviation in 2023. Mohamed Djaoued Fasla pointed out that "cereals, all varieties combined, were the leading imported commodity in 2023, with an estimated volume of 2,306,996 tonnes, compared with 2,472,120 tonnes in 2022, a negative deviation of around 7%".
