The Spanish chemical industry is increasingly interested in the Algerian market

The Spanish Chemical Industry Federation (Feique), in partnership with ICEX España Exportación e Inversiones, organized a meeting in Madrid on September 23 dedicated to Spanish chemical products' access to the Algerian market.

Cristina Olazábal explained that the Spanish chemical industry is increasingly interested in the Algerian market, a country undergoing transformation that combines strong import demand with industrial projects under development. She pointed out that the Algerian chemical sector remains focused on petrochemicals, fertilizers, certain inorganic products, and basic plastics, which leads to significant reliance on imports in other sectors such as textiles, food, construction, automotive, and pharmaceuticals. Between 2020 and 2024, imports of chemical products into Algeria increased by 58% to more than €4.2 billion per year. Spain is one of the main suppliers alongside China, France, and Turkey.

According to Feique, speakers also pointed out that Algeria has launched a five-year plan for 2025-2029 with more than $7 billion in investments. This program includes the construction of a polypropylene plant in Arzew, an LPG and condensate separation unit, and an alkylbenzene factory. However, exporters must adapt to certain local constraints: obtaining import licenses, specific documentation requirements, restrictions on Incoterms (CIF being prohibited), and strictly regulated means of payment, particularly through transfers or letters of credit. The meeting ended with a discussion with participants, led by Mª Eugenia Anta, Director of International Affairs, Investment and Innovation at Feique. The discussions confirmed the Spanish chemical sector's interest in Algeria and the desire to strengthen trade ties between the two countries.
