news-detail

“We need to invest in the agricultural assets in the south of the country, in order to achieve food self-sufficiency and meet the economic and future challenges,” the minister said at the end of his working visit to this wilaya, stating that this is precisely the mission that his ministerial department is undertaking.

“The Wilaya of Touggourt has significant agricultural potential enabling it to play a leading role in terms of qualitative agricultural profitability,” the minister said, adding that “it is necessary to make greater efforts to promote investment opportunities in this sector and to diversify agricultural production, particularly in strategic sectors.”

In that regard, he stated that ‘the agricultural sector strategy focuses on the encouragement and development of strategic products, such as cereals, fodder, sugar beet and sunflower, before emphasizing ‘the need to expand palm trees area to promote date production and, consequently, the export opportunities for that strategic product’.

After a brief presentation on the state of agriculture in the region, Mr. Henni urged policymakers and farmers to redouble their efforts to promote and diversify production.

In this context, it is noted that the Wilaya of Touggourt produced, during the last agricultural season, more than one (1) million quintals (QX) of dates of all varieties, more than 4 602 QX of olives and 238.4 QX of cereals.
