Ghar-Djebilat iron ore prospecting project launched in March

Guest of the Forum of the daily Echâab, the minister indicated that the Ghar-Djebilet project is considered among the priorities of the sector, especially since Algeria needs to produce 12 million tons of iron, in order to cover the national needs, current production not exceeding 5 million tons.

So far, discussions with the Chinese partner have been concluded, while the final step to determine funding will have to be completed, Arkab said.

The operations require the use of modern techniques, with a view to de-phosphorization at a rate of less than 0.05%, in collaboration with the Chinese partner.

In order to be able to economically exploit iron, de-phosphorization at a rate of 0.1% is required, which is one of the most important challenges of the Ghar-Djebilet and Mecheri project. Abdelaziz (160 km south of Tindouf) which has a reserve of 3.5 billion tonnes of iron, with a high phosphorus concentration of up to 0.8%.

The sector is working in coordination with other ministerial departments (Transport, Water Resources and Energy) to meet the needs of the project, which will be monitored by high-level Algerian experts, the minister said.
