Bellara steel complex: commissioning of the direct reduction unit

In a press statement on the sidelines of the ceremony held on the occasion, the head of the AQS indicated that this direct reduction unit which entered into activity this Sunday constitutes "the beating heart" of the complex with a capacity of up to 2, 5 million tonnes per year of hot and cold reduced iron.

He also added that this direct reduction is the ultra developed American Midrex technology which allows to produce high quality reduced iron with a purity level of over 94% while reducing the production cost through a process of saving energy and environmental conservation using natural gas.

According to the same source, efforts will currently be directed towards meeting the needs of the national iron market and demand for projects with the reservation of 20% of production for export as part of the diversification of non-hydrocarbon exports.

Youcef Ahmed El Mohannadi noted that the complex is following with interest the development of production from the Ghar Djebilet mine with a view to using it locally and avoiding resorting to importing raw ore.

The manager of the AQS complex said that the entry into activity of this direct reduction unit will generate new jobs according to a program pre-established by the administration providing to increase the number of workers from 1,500 currently to 2,300 in addition to 5,000 others. indirect jobs.

For his part, the CEO of the Imetal group, Tarek Bouslama, affirmed that the entry into operation of the direct reduction unit constitutes "an announcement of Algeria's passage towards a new stage of the steel industry and of development. of local industry in line with international standards ".

"This is, he assured, a living and radiant example of the win-win partnership between Algeria and Qatar".

This direct reduction unit is in addition to ten other units in the Bellara steel complex, including three rolling mills, two furnaces, a lime plant, and another for the production of industrial gases, according to the same source.
