Wali Mabrouk Ould Abdennebi launched a project in Hassi El Ghella to plant 1,600 olive trees across eight hectares, as part of a vast national program aimed at expanding olive cultivation. The program covers 450 hectares spread across 18 municipalities, with technical support provided from the outset to ensure the young plants thrive.

Farms equipped with irrigation systems are receiving special attention to create a local hub specializing in olive production. The authorities also plan to train farmers and disseminate best practices to improve management and productivity.

The programme, scheduled for completion by the end of the year, aims to optimise yields, strengthen the olive sector and promote modern and sustainable agricultural techniques. The area under olive cultivation has increased from 5,000 hectares in 2013 to nearly 10,700 hectares today, with an estimated production of 300,000 quintals.

Beyond its agricultural aspect, this initiative is expected to generate economic opportunities, support rural development and contribute to food security in the province.
