This project is expected to
enter a new phase soon, with the start of work on a 1,048 km line connecting
Chefa to the wilaya of In Salah. According to Abdelkader Djellaoui, the
Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, preparations are continuing
for the launch of work on four sections. "The operations to clear land and
release rights of way and install base camps are continuing on the four
sections, the first of which covers a distance of 153 km connecting Chefa to
Boughezoul, while the second will connect the two wilayas of Laghouat and
Ghardaïa over a distance of 265 km.
The most important part of this project is the line connecting the province of
Ghardaïa to Menea over a distance of 230 km, and Menea to In Salah over 400 km.
"This new stage comes after the launch of the Bouguezoul-Djelfa-Laghouat
line over a distance of 250 km. This represents a significant step forward in
the modernization of the national rail network," according to the press
release issued following the minister's visit to the province of Médéa.
According to the minister, this rail line is of paramount importance to the
country's economy because of its key role in connecting the south and north of
the country.
In fact, the project enjoys significant
support from senior government officials, who now want to make this new line
the main artery for conquering the African market and also for the optimal
exploitation of the natural resources that abound in the far south of the
country. It is therefore a strategic infrastructure for Algeria, which is
working to strengthen its position in the African market to assert itself
through the latest export contracts signed by Algerian and African operators at
the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) last August in Algiers.
In this sense, providing the country with a valuable logistical resource
such as the railway, which has been one of the main pillars of economic
development in countries over the last two centuries, will play a key role in
implementing the country's export-oriented trade strategy. This has brought
this major project under the scrutiny of the President of the Republic, who is
insisting on accelerating its implementation following Algeria's accession to
the Inter-African Free Trade Area.
The arrival of the train in the province of Tamanrasset, which is
expected to become an export hub to the African continent in the coming years,
will serve to boost trade with the South, which today represents a growth niche
for the global economy.
