Cereals: Algeria, the second largest producer of barley in the Arab world and Africa

According to a report by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Algeria ranks second among the largest barley producers in the Arab world and Africa, with production estimated at around 1.2 million tonnes for the 2024/2025 season.

Algeria ranks second in the Arab world, just behind Iraq, whose production reached 1.4 million tons this season, according to data from the US Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).


On a continental scale, Algeria ranks second behind Ethiopia, which produced 2.48 million tons during the same season.

Algerian barley production for the 2024/2025 season increased by 17% compared to 2023/2024, rising from 1.03 million tons to 1.23 million tons, according to data from the same department.

Global production reached approximately 143.33 million tons, a slight decrease of 0.13% compared to the 2023/2024 season (143.51 million tons).
