At the Revade trade show, Trade Minister Amel Abdellatif announced a sharp increase in the number of recycling companies, from 14,229 in 2020 to 19,469 in 2025, a sign of growing interest in the circular economy. This momentum is supported by measures to promote start-ups and changes to the commercial register.

However, the recycling rate remains low: only 10 to 12% of the 34 to 36 million tons of waste produced each year is recycled, 7 to 10% household waste. The waste volume is expected to reach 70 to 75 million tons by 2035, and its non-recovery has already led to an estimated economic loss of 207 billion dinars in 2023.

The main obstacles are the lack of sorting infrastructure, the predominance of landfilling, the absence of widespread selective sorting, the under-exploitation of organic waste, which accounts for 76% of household waste, and the poorly regulated role of the informal sector.

The national strategy aims to increase recovery to 47% by 2035 and create 30,000 jobs. However, without infrastructure modernization, citizen involvement, regulation of the informal sector, and significant investment, the economic potential of recycling will remain largely untapped.
