Domestic Airlines set for imminent takeoff

Yesterday's working visit by Transport Minister Saïd Sayoud to the province of El Oued provided an opportunity for a series of announcements concerning the development of the sector's capacity at both regional and national levels.

Speaking to local officials, the Minister stressed the need to "speed up the expansion project" at Guemar airport (north-west of El Oued), emphasising the importance now attached by the State to domestic air transport. According to Saïd Sayoud, the new Domestic Airlines is "imminent".

A matter of days, as Saïd Sayoud, Minister of Transport, points out, this new Air Algérie subsidiary, specialized and sized for domestic flights, will see the "launch of its activities in the next few days". However, he notes that the rapid implementation of this national-scale project is "in line with the instructions of the President of the Republic". And the objective to be achieved is clear for the head of the transport sector: "to reduce distances" by "reinforcing domestic air links (...) by improving the transport offer and services" for the benefit of citizens.

Sayoud also announced a probable change in the choice of international destinations. "We could revise our program. The public authorities are working hard to implement this crucial project, by increasing the number of domestic routes to meet the expectations of the public, in particular by increasing the number of flights and opening new services in line with the specific characteristics of the regions, particularly those of the South", he declared.

As a reminder, Domestic Airlines, whose registration was officially
announced at the beginning of July, will "initially" operate the 15 aircraft of the former Tassili Airlines. A major order for no fewer than 16 ATR aircraft, "for delivery from next September", was signed on July 3 by Rabah Midou, head of Air Algérie, and Alexis Vidal, Vice-President and Sales Director of the European company Avions de transport régional (ATR).

As part of this drive to boost transport capacity, the Minister of Transport
hinted yesterday that Guemar airport is set to become a hub for air transit in the east of the country, particularly during the pilgrimage to Mecca. Saïd Sayoud explains that the sector is "preparing to launch an urgent study to build a boarding hall dedicated to domestic flights, in line with the
specificities of the region". Local officials, for their part, are called upon to "speed up the airport extension project to meet the growing increase in demand".

On another level, the Minister of Transport points out that the land infrastructures of the border wilaya of El Oued will have to be adapted to the high level of goods and passenger traffic between Algeria and Tunisia. A press release from the Ministry of Transport, published at the end of the day, explains that Minister Saïd Sayoud, accompanied by the Director General of Customs, noted the progress of the "development and expansion project" at the border post in the commune of Taleb Larbi (on Route Nationale 123). According to the same source, this crossing point is "vital" for boosting trade with neighbouring Tunisia.

In this connection, the Transport sector has also announced the "launch of international land transport lines to Tunisia". The implementation of this project, currently under preparation, "will support trade and tourism between the two sister countries".
