The 5th Annual High Level Meeting of the Energy
Dialog between Algeria and the EU held a few days ago in Brussels, enabled the
two sides to launch a new cooperation program worth 15 million euros with the
aim of supporting the development of renewable energy projects in Algeria. This
includes the promotion of all research and pilot projects for the development
of green hydrogen. According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Algeria plans
to invest between $20 billion and $25 billion in green hydrogen by 2040 in
three main phases: start-up through pilot projects (2023 to 2030), expansion
and market creation (2030 to 2040) and industrialization and market
competitiveness (2040 to 2050). By 2040, Algeria plans to produce and export
30-40 TWh of gaseous and liquid hydrogen, with a mix of blue hydrogen, produced
from gas, and green hydrogen produced by electrolysis using the country’s vast
solar resources, with the goal of supplying Europe with 10% of its green
hydrogen needs by 2040.
