According to port's CEO, Abdeslam Bouab, quoted by APS news agency, non-hydrocarbon exports (iron, cement, construction materials and others) are set to increase by an estimated 3% in 2023, with this figure set to rise once the container terminal is completed, with work due to start in 2024.
The port's activity is also expected to increase in the first half of 2024, following the reception and commissioning, in April and June respectively, of two automatic loading equipment units imported from China.
This equipment will speed up shipping operations for goods to be exported, and make berthing, loading and unloading ships quick and easy, thereby substantially reducing waiting time in the harbour and, consequently, demurrage.
Looking ahead to 2023 in the province of Jijel, the APS reported that work had started again on the Koutama Agrifood oilseed crushing, oilseed cattle-cake and oil production complex, due to be operational in the first half of 2024, and the commissioning of the Jumagro factory in Taher, the fruit of a partnership between the Agrodiv group and the public holding company Madar, specialising in fruit and vegetable processing and the production of extra virgin olive oil.
The year 2023 also saw the relaunch and commissioning of Jumagro public economic establishment in the municipality of Taher, the fruit of a partnership between the Agrodiv complex (60%) and Madar Holding Company (40%), specialising in the processing of fruit and vegetables and the production of virgin olive oil (an activity currently being tested with the delivery by Agral of a first batch of 60 tonnes of olives), with a capacity of 500 bottles/day.
