This roadmap was discussed at a workshop to present and promote the national strategy for the development of the hydrogen sector, organized by the line Ministry, on March 23, 2023, attended by Minister of Environment and Renewable Energies, Fazia Dahleb; Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun; Commissioner of Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (Cerefe), Noureddine Yassaa, as well as many sector experts and representatives of various institutions.

According to the line ministry, this strategy aims to make Algeria one of the pioneer countries in the production and marketing of this clean energy and it aims to provide the European market with 10% of its needs by 2040. Speakers highlighted the technical capabilities and competitive advantages of the country in the production and export of 30 and 40 billion kilowatts (kW) of gaseous, liquefied and derived hydrogen, which could supply the European market with 10% of its needs by 2040, at very competitive selling prices.

The roadmap goes through three stages. The first phase will focus on start-up and training (2023-2030); the second phase will focus on market expansion and creation (2030-2040) and the final phase (2040-2050) on industrialization and export of blue hydrogen, produced through methane conversion, and green hydrogen, through the electrolysis of water using renewable energy.
