An official ceremony, presided over by the Minister of Transport, Mr. Said Sayoud, along with the Wali of Algiers and several high-ranking officials, celebrated the completion of this strategic project, entirely carried out by local skills and in compliance with international standards.

After almost a decade of stagnation, this development and consolidation work has increased the port's capacity, with three new quays totalling 880 metres in length. According to the Entreprise portuaire d'Alger (EPAL), these infrastructures offer a surface gain of 70,000 m², capable of accommodating more than 6,000 additional containers. This improvement will significantly reduce the number of ships waiting in the harbour, thus optimizing trade flows.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mr. Sayoud welcomed the relaunch of this project, underlining its economic impact on the country. He went on to say that the project, carried out by national companies such as Cosider and Meditram, as well as local design offices, was a testament to Algeria's ability to build modern, competitive infrastructures.

Enhanced port capacity

According to Epal General Manager Abdelhamid Boualaam, the reopening of these quays will have an immediate operational impact, boosting the port's capacity by 300 ships and 150,000 containers a year. He added that ship waiting times, which used to be between 10 and 12 hours a day, should fall to around 6 hours a day, thanks to more fluid operations.

Mr. Boualaam expects freight traffic to increase by 25% by 2025, thanks to the arrival of deeper-draught ships and more efficient management.

According to the same official, this optimization will also result in a reduction in costs, notably demurrage (penalties for prolonged vessel immobilization), so as to lighten the burden on the public treasury.

Epal's CEO also pointed out that, as part of a large modernisation plan, the Port of Algiers company plans to acquire six specific cranes for container handling, as well as digitising services and training staff. He announced that a fourth quay (quay 18) will be delivered by the end of the month, further consolidating the infrastructure.

Towards accelerated modernization

These efforts are part of a broader strategy, driven by the directives of the President of the Republic, with several investments dedicated to the country's ports, as part of the port infrastructure modernization program. In addition to the equipment ordered for 2024, Serport has earmarked DA29 billion for the acquisition of new equipment for the current year, including gantry cranes, cranes, stackers, scanners and more.

A further DA14 billion has been earmarked for the rehabilitation of port infrastructures, including the reinforcement of quays and the dredging of coastal areas to facilitate berthing of large vessels.

The ports concerned are Algiers, where four quays will be rehabilitated; Annaba, where a quay will be reinforced to link the southern and northern parts of the port; and Ténès and Ghazaouate, where the approaches will be dredged.

This dynamic is accompanied by a rigorous approach involving the creation of specialized working groups to ensure precise project monitoring and extend the model to other national ports.

With these advances, the Port of Algiers is positioning itself as a key link in the national economy, strengthening not only its regional competitiveness, but also its role in the country's commercial integration, opening up a new era for national maritime logistics, geared towards innovation and performance.
