In its latest issue of the review, the company explained that between January and March, the number of ships berthing at the country's main port infrastructure reached 393 vessels, of which 314 were operational, achieving 100% of the set target, representing an increase of 4.24% compared to the same quarter in 2023.
As for the overall cargo traffic, it amounted to 1.93 million tons, marking an increase of 4.57% compared to the same period last year.
The company attributes this evolution "mainly to the increase in container traffic and hydrocarbons."
The unloaded goods amounted to 1,588,409 tons (+3.14%), while those loaded (exported) totaled 347,111 tons during the first quarter compared to 310,836 tons in the first quarter of 2023 (+11.67%), mainly driven by the increase in container and hydrocarbon exports.
Regarding container traffic handled by Epal, the report states a total of 64,917 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) received against a forecast of 66,735 TEUs, achieving 97% of the target, noting that this type of port traffic increased by 16% between January and March.
In terms of volume, the gross tonnage of containers handled between January and March reached 535,739 tons, according to Epal, which indicates that these data show "respective positive variations of (+6.97%) and (+4.02%) for gross tonnage and net tonnage compared to the first quarter of 2023."
Furthermore, the containerization rate recorded in the first three months of the current year was 94% compared to 95% during the same period in 2023.
