Algeria, a growth market for Malaysian palm oil

According to the Malaysian ambassador to Algiers, Rizany Irwan Muhamad Mazlan, Algeria represents an interesting market for palm oil exports from Malaysia, quoted by Bernama, Malaysia's national news agency. This potential is due to the growing dynamism of the Algerian agri-food industry.

In 2024, exports of Malaysian palm oil to Algeria rose significantly, by almost 82% to around 79,000 tons. Although palm oil still accounts for a minor share of Algeria's annual imports of 980,000 tons of cooking oil, demand could grow, supported by the development of the country's agri-food industry.

Algeria currently relies on imports for 75% of its cooking oil needs. To reduce this dependence, the country is developing the oil plant cultivation, such as sunflower and rapeseed, in the southern regions, with the support of companies such as Cevital. The aim is to create an integrated local industry from cultivation to processing.

Malaysia seeks to strengthen its presence in the Algerian market, particularly through sectors such as confectionery, margarine-based products, non-dairy creams, oleochemicals and research. The participation of the Malaysian Palm Oil Council and Malaysian companies at the Djazagro trade fair in Algiers helped to highlight these opportunities. Discussions between the Malaysian ambassador and the Algerian Chamber of Commerce also covered the cooperation in digital technology, tourism, the halal industry and cross-investment.
