Africa aims to create 3.3 million green jobs by 2030

The transition to a green economy in Africa could create between 1.5 and 3.3 million skilled jobs in solar energy, electric mobility, and climate-smart agriculture. A recent report identified five key sectors for their job creation potential: energy, transport, agriculture, construction, and manufacturing, with solar energy expected to account for around 70% of the projected jobs. Countries with the highest potential for a green economy include South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where targeted investment could create around 700,000 jobs by 2030.

The study highlights that 60% of these green jobs will be skilled, which could support the growth of Africa's middle class. However, to fully capitalize on this opportunity, Africa has to mobilize more than $100 billion annually to train the workforce, develop the necessary infrastructure and implement policies to secure investment. The report recommends close collaboration between governments, the private sector, and educational institutions to maximize the benefits of this transition.
