Sonelgaz deploys in the Sahel: Algeria is ready to support its Burkinabe counterpart

Algeria is actively pursuing its strategy of international energy expansion, particularly in Africa and the Sahel through Sonelgaz, strengthening its cooperative ties with Burkina Faso in a significant move of economic diplomacy.

During a videoconference between Mourad Adjal, CEO of Sonelgaz, and Souleymane Ouédraogo, CEO of Sonabel (Burkina Faso), the two companies explored a strategic partnership in the energy sector. This initiative is part of Algeria's African diplomacy, which relies on the skills transfer to increase its influence on the continent. Drawing on its experience with NIGELEC in Niger, Sonelgaz is offering technical support to Sonabel, including power generation reinforcement, network development, power system management and specialized training.

Sonelgaz has five technical and administrative schools and intends to make training a cornerstone of this cooperation. Sonabel's CEO has proposed sending a delegation to Algeria to finalize a memorandum of understanding. This strategy illustrates Algeria's use of soft power through a South-South cooperation approach, focusing on sustainable partnerships and joint development rather than traditional assistance.
