After argan: Focus on saffron cultivation

After strategic crops, pulses, oilseeds, and argan, Algeria is turning its attention to saffron cultivation.

The Ministers of Higher Education and Agriculture launched the national strategy for the development of saffron cultivation in Algeria at the ENSA in Algiers. This spice, introduced in 2018, has strong socioeconomic potential due to its high value and multiple uses (culinary, cosmetic, therapeutic).  The strategy aims to leverage research findings, enhance productivity, develop new seeds, organise a local industry, and promote exports. A cooperation agreement has been signed between the higher education and agriculture sectors to provide technical support for the industry, assist producers, and enable the export of Algerian saffron. The ministers praised the efforts already made and visited the ENSA farm to launch the planting campaign.
