In 2023, Algeria produced 575,000 tons of apples, up 4.8% from 2022, ranking 23rd worldwide (0.59% of global production) and third in Africa. The provinces of Batna and Khenchela lead the way, each producing over 180,000 tons per year. Production is expected to increase through the expansion of farms and new technologies. On the global market, China dominates with 48 million tons, ahead of the EU, the US, and Turkey.

With 170,000 tons a year, Algeria is also the leading Arab producer of pears, far outstripping Egypt, Morocco and Lebanon. This production, intended almost exclusively for the local market, suffers from low export levels, limited by inadequate infrastructure and a poorly structured industry. Targeted investments in processing and export could enable the country to capitalize on this potential and follow a growth trajectory similar to that of the apple sector.
