The Director of Integrated Waste Management at AND, Mrs. Fatma-Zohra Barça, said that the selective waste sorting system will soon be implemented in the provinces of Algiers, Boumerdes and Oran in order to facilitate waste recycling.
The generalization of this operation to the other provinces will be “progressively”, because its realization requires “significant” material, financial and logistical means, she added.
The sorting system makes it possible to optimize waste recovery operations, particularly those carried out by companies specializing in recycling, the same official stressed, recalling that Algeria produces more than 13 million tons of household waste, of which only 30% is recyclable.
According to Ms. Barça, only 9.83% of 30% of recyclable household waste is recovered, pointing out that the target set by the environmental sector is to recover 30% of household waste, 80% of hazardous waste, and 50% of inert waste by 2035.
Algeria has a total of 14,000 companies operating in the field of recycling and waste recovery, according to the same manager.
