Desalination plants: ADC adopts innovative solutions to control energy consumption

As seawater desalination is a highly energy-intensive activity, the ADC has been led to adopt innovative technological solutions, such as PX (Pressure Exchanger) technology, also known as energy recovery systems, explained Mouloud Hachelaf, assistant to the CEO of the ADC in charge of communications, in a statement to the APS on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the Renewable Energy, Future Energy and Sustainable Development Exhibition (ERA). 30% of energy needs from solar power


This equipment recovers the pressure generated during the various stages of the desalination process and converts it into reusable energy, thereby contributing to an estimated 40-50% reduction in electricity consumption, explains Mouloud Hachelaf. PX technology is already operational in five plants across the country, notably in Oran, Tipaza, Boumerdes, El Tarf and Bejaïa, he pointed out, adding that it will be systematically integrated into all future desalination projects. In addition, ADC, a subsidiary of the Sonatrach group, has opted for reverse osmosis, considered to be the least energy-intensive technology compared to thermal processes such as multi-stage distillation (MSF), thereby contributing to an overall optimisation of energy consumption, Hachelaf added.

Discussing the outlook for 2030, the same official indicated that the ADC aims to integrate a more sustainable energy mix, particularly using photovoltaics, to partially power desalination plants. The goal is to cover up to 30% of each plant's energy needs with solar power. However, such a project requires a large amount of land, up to around 30 hectares per plant, he said. Pilot projects have already been launched, notably at the Chatt El Hilal seawater desalination plant in Aïn Temouchent, he recalled, emphasising that the ADC now intends to move on to larger-scale implementation gradually and methodically.
