Tlemcen: More than 317,000 quintals of olives expected

According to the head of the production organisation and technical support department (SOPAT) at the agricultural services directorate, 317,000 quintals of olives are expected to be produced in the wilaya of Tlemcen during the current harvest season.

(DSA) The latter points out that the olive harvest campaign, launched at the end of October, covers an estimated 880 15 hectares, with an expected average yield of up to 20 quintals per hectare.

This official pointed out that the olive harvest campaign, since it began, has covered an area of 970 hectares, with an estimated 138,000 quintals, and that a directive of 55, 200 hectares is expected to be harvested for consumption (table olives) and 800.82 quintals for processing into olive oil through 31 oil mills available in the wilaya and 19 units for preserving olives.

This official emphasised the development of olive tree planting in the wilaya of Tlemcen, explaining that this was due to the farmers' demand for this branch and to compensation for non-productive trees and the use of drip irrigation technology, as well as the Ministry's programme to develop this important sector.
