Modernizing the Algerian Rail Network: towards an Infrastructure to match Economic Ambitions

At a Council of Ministers meeting devoted to railway development, the President of the Republic set ambitious targets, calling for a construction rate of over 2 kilometres per day, in line with international standards. Among the flagship projects, the Béchar-Tindouf-Gara Djebilet line is making significant progress, with a 68% completion rate for embankments on its first section.

An investment program of DZD378 billion is planned up to 2035, including the delivery of 768 km of new rail lines, such as El Bayadh-Méchéria, and the acquisition of 400 wagons and new locomotives. At the same time, 82 railway stations will be modernized, including 8 major key stations, with features to enhance users' safety and comfort.

In addition, the sector is focusing on track maintenance, particularly in the south, with anti-sanding solutions developed in collaboration with experts and scientists. With 2,773 km of new lines under construction, freight transport could soon reach 5.6 million tons.

This modernization reflects Algeria's commitment to building a modern rail network as a catalyst for economic growth.
