Seven freighters at a standstill

The Minister of Transport, Saïd Sayoud, revealed on Monday, February 24 that seven (7) freight vessels are “at a standstill and out of service”.

"Seven freighters are currently shut down and out of service," said the Minister during a session before the Transport and Telecommunications Committee of the National People's Assembly (APN). "We are working to put these ships back into service," he assured the audience.

 

"The Prime Minister took a series of measures and gave instructions to the Ministry of Finance, where teams have begun to work on the financing needed to bring these idle vessels back into service," said the Minister.

 

To develop maritime transport, the Minister affirmed that efforts were underway to rehabilitate the maritime fleet reserved for the transport of goods and passengers, adding that the recommissioning of the car-ferry Tariq Ibn Ziyad "will take place immediately upon completion of the renovation work" on the vessel.

 

At the same time, efforts are underway to optimize port performance, by adopting the 24/24H regime and acquiring modern equipment worth DA70 billion, with the reinforcement of dry ports to facilitate internal travel and ease the burden on the main ports.

 

Concerning air transport, Mr Sayoud stressed the importance of acquiring 16 new aircraft to ease the pressure on domestic flights, welcoming the cooperation agreement signed between Air Algérie and Tassili Airlines, aimed at improving services, expanding the air transport network, and satisfying the growing demand from the inhabitants of the southern wilayas.

 

Regarding land transport, the Minister mentioned the efforts made to renew and strengthen the urban and suburban transport fleet, with the involvement of private operators to improve service quality.

 

Concerning rail transport, Mr Sayoud announced that 600 billion dinars had been earmarked to reinforce infrastructure, asserting that projects in this field were part of the implementation of the President of the Republic's guidelines and the Government's action plan, aimed at boosting the sector and reinforcing national economic performance.
