Seawater desalination in Algeria: Spain loses contracts estimated at millions of euros

Algeria has decided to change the development strategy of its water projects and, contrary to the program of the 2000s, in which Spanish companies actively participated, the new plants will be financed by public funds, with public construction companies in the lead, according to the Spanish daily newspaper “La Informacion”

The big business of desalination plants in Algeria, which until the end of 2021 had 11 plants, 7 of which with Spanish participation in the fields of design, construction, management, or maintenance, will not benefit the big Spanish companies.

The offers, which already have an owner, concern the design, supply, and commissioning of desalination plants, indicating that the project holder will oversee construction, the objective is to provide drinking water to more than 6.5 million Algerians by 2050, according to the Spanish newspaper.

None of the projects awarded in recent months related to sanitation and water treatment has been granted to foreign companies, since Algiers decided to restrict participation in tenders to domestic companies, which have already won study, supply, installation, and start-up contracts, according to the same source.
