The Spanish companies Saica and Industrias Químicas del Ebro (IQE) have resumed their exports to Algeria following the reopening of automatic bank payments for Spanish goods, announced on November 6. Saica, whose sales to Algeria have dropped by 40% since 2022, plans to relaunch its commercial circuits and export products from Spain and France.
Ángel Rueda, commercial director of IQE, expresses joy at the revival of trade with Algeria, a market representing 2-3% of the company's annual turnover. However, the company, which has no production facilities outside Spain, must now work to regain lost market share due to the previous closure of the Algerian market.
Julio Lebrero, director of Acomhel, a company specializing in public works machinery, harshly criticized the Spanish government and the EU, noting that no support had been provided during the crisis. Acomhel, losing 90% of its business with Algeria by 2022, has had to diversify into other European markets.
Exports from the Aragon region to Algeria have significantly declined recently, falling from 131 million euros in 2019 to just 54 million euros in 2022, and dropping to zero in 2023. This decline is due to the interruption of trade between the two countries.
