Regulating the Economy: The Path to Digitalization

President Tebboune said full digitalization of the economy would provide all the data needed for decision-making, allowing accurate access to the list of producers and their products, as well as the quantities they produce, and the sectors in which to invest. Moreover, the use of digitalization will provide a clearer picture of the capacities of the national economy, added President Tebboune who pointed out that Algeria did not want to declare more than USD 225 billion as the official figure for gross domestic product (GDP) in 2022, when in reality it could be between USD 240 and 245 billion.

Asked about the High Council for the Regulation of Imports, the president stressed that it would provide an area for coordination and consultation between the various sectors concerned by the regulation of the import sector, avoiding individual decisions that could cause fluctuations in the market. The objective is to protect domestic production without creating a shortage on the market, the President of the Republic argued, stressing that the quantities to be imported will be determined in a manner complementary to the quantities produced locally. In that regard, he stressed the importance of preserving the achievements made in the field of national production, in order to preserve the ‘autonomy of the country’.
