The Algerian Ministry of Energy and Mines recently discussed with the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) a project for cancer radiopharmaceutical production at the Birine Nuclear Research Centre. This strategic project addresses Algeria's growing demand for nuclear medicine treatments, particularly for serious diseases such as cancer. Local production of isotopes will reduce dependence on imports and improve access to treatment for Algerian patients.

The collaboration with China also includes the production of new radioisotopes such as lutetium and gallium, known for their effectiveness in cancer treatment. Both parties emphasized the importance of bilateral exchanges and the development of nuclear medicine in Algeria because of its impact on national health security. A joint working group between COMENA and CNNC has been tasked with drawing up an action plan for this cooperation on the nuclear techniques applications for health purposes.
