Fig production: Farmers call for additional aid.

Many farmers in the commune of Beni Maouche in the wilaya of Bejaïa have expressed fears that this year's fig production will be lower than in previous years, for several reasons, mainly linked to the recent climatic conditions in the region.

Forest fires in recent years in the Hammadites' capital are another reason for the shortage of this product in various regions of the Bejaïa wilaya, notably the Beni Maouche area.

Production is often abundant, but this year it has dropped considerably, prompting the Bejaïa Farmers' Association to cancel the planned dry fig festival.

They also called on the State to reconsider the type of subsidies available to farmers in the Beni Maouche region.

Some have pointed out that the weather conditions have prompted a review of the support given to this sector, which has been a protected fruit for many years despite the various obstacles encountered by farmers in the field.
