Agricultural fertilizer production: Towards national self-sufficiency by 2027

With the launch of preparatory work on the phosphate mining megaproject in the Bled El Hadba region (southernmost Tébessa) and the construction of a nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer processing and production complex at Oued Keberit, in the wilaya of Souk Ahras, Algeria is gearing up to become a major player in the fertilizer industry.

By 2027, Algeria aims to produce agricultural fertilisers locally thanks to an integrated phosphate mining and processing project in the country's east, a key lever for boosting national food security and meeting the growing demand for fertilisers. This strategic project, led by Sonatrach and Sonarem, is based on Algeria's vast phosphate reserves, estimated at more than 3 billion tonnes, placing Algeria among the world's top 10 countries in terms of reserves.

Production capacities:
10.5 million tons of raw phosphate per year.
4 million tons of phosphate-based fertiliser per year.
1.14 million tons of urea per year.

Economic and social impact:

  • 12,000 direct jobs were created during the construction phase 6,000 direct jobs during the operating phase, and 24,000 indirect jobs.
  • Develop an industrial fabric in the wilayas of Tébessa, Souk Ahras and Annaba, with local economic spin-offs and foreign exchange earnings from exports.
    Production chain:

  • Extraction: Bled El Hadba mine.
  • Chemical processing: Complex at Oued Keberit to produce phosphate and nitrogen fertilisers, using natural gas to generate ammonia and urea.
  • Export: Port of Annaba, with a dedicated rail line.

This project, managed entirely by Algerian expertise, is part of a long-term vision to develop national agriculture, modernise industry and diversify the economy by drawing on the country's natural resources.
