Youcef Cherfa, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development discussed the government's recent incentive measures to support farmers in the western wilayas, particularly in drought-affected Tiaret. These measures include extending the repayment period for seasonal loans to three years in order to strengthen the agricultural sector. Cherfa stressed the importance of these initiatives in achieving the President's goal of raising GDP to $400 billion by 2027.
He also mentioned the ambitions of the 'agricultural revolution', which includes increasing production of wheat, pulses, and sunflowers. Over the next three years, 1 million hectares will be cultivated, including 280,000 hectares for maize, 500,000 for durum wheat and 300,000 for oilseeds. A green corridor has been created to facilitate investment on more than 10,000 hectares, allowing direct cooperation with the Ministry.
During his visit to Tiaret, Cherfa inaugurated a 15,000 cubic metre cold storage facility to increase storage capacity. He also visited another facility in Hammadia with a capacity of more than 80,000 m³, which is essential for the preservation of agricultural products. The minister stressed the need for partnerships between the public and private sectors to build strategic stocks and better regulate the market.
Finally, Cherfa ordered the storage of agricultural products to begin in November. He also visited a potato production unit and stressed the importance of prioritizing this sector and mobilizing water resources for irrigation. A commitment was made to plant 5,000 hectares of seasonal potatoes in the wilaya of Tiaret.
