Fishing: The first tuna fishing boat to be built in Tlemcen will enter service next June

The fishing industry in the wilaya of Tlemcen plays a major role in the national economy. It provides jobs and contributes to food security. It has a fleet of 495 boats.

The wilaya of Tlemcen is expected to produce more than 7,800 tonnes of fish in 2023, thanks to its favourable geographical location near the Strait of Gibraltar. Major investments have been made in the sector, including seven tuna boats' construction, the first of which will enter service before June 2024. The Sidna Youchaa fishing port, with a capacity of 295 boats, will become a major hub for deep-sea fishing, aiming to reduce pressure on the port of Ghazaouet.

The fishing sector also expanded, with Tlemcen taking part in the bluefin tuna fishing season with a quota of 253 tonnes out of a national total of 2,046 tonnes. In addition, a bluefin tuna fattening farm with an annual capacity of 950 tons will be operational in 2024, marking a significant step forward for the sector.

The wilaya has several active aquaculture projects, with an annual production capacity of 2,600 tonnes of fish, mainly sea bass and gilthead bream. Expansion is planned, with the installation of new floating cages and the seeding of millions of fry. A project to cultivate seaweed to produce cosmetic and para-pharmaceutical products is underway.

Three aquaculture business zones have been created to facilitate investment in various fish farming, seafood processing and shipbuilding projects, making the sector more attractive to local and foreign developers.
