Fishing: Algeria and New Zealand examine opportunities for cooperation

Opportunities for cooperation in the fisheries sector were examined on Wednesday in Algiers, bringing together Algerian experts and their New Zealand counterparts, particularly in terms of training, scientific research and exchanges of experience, according to a press release from the Ministry of Fishing and Fisheries.

A technical meeting was held at the head office of the Ministry of Fisheries and Fisheries Productions, chaired by the New Zealand ambassador to Algiers, Amy Laurenson. The discussions focused on three main areas: exchange of experience in fisheries and aquaculture training, harnessing New Zealand's expertise to promote cooperatives and organise the profession, and strengthening cooperation in scientific research between the two countries institutes to develop sustainable fishing techniques and protect marine ecosystems.

 

Ms Laurenson congratulated Algeria on winning the Compliance and Responsiveness Award of the FAO's General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), following its progress in applying sustainable fishing standards and managing fisheries resources. The award was presented at the 47th session of the GFCM in Rome in November 2024.
