Bluefin tuna fishing: Algeria regains its historic share

In a press release, the Directorate General for Fisheries and Aquaculture (DGPA) announced that Algeria has regained its historical share of bluefin tuna fishing, which now stands at 5.10% of the total quota allocated to member countries of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).

Algeria secured a significant increase in its bluefin tuna fishing quota at the 29th ICCAT meeting in Seville, rising from 2,023 to 2,460 tons for the period 2026-2028. This result is the outcome of difficult negotiations led by the Algerian delegation under the supervision of the Minister of Agriculture. This decision corrects an injustice dating back to 2010, when Algeria's absence cut its share to just 1%. Despite strong competition among member countries and the arrival of new members, Algeria was able to register its case for 2028  to compensate fully for past damage. The session also reappointed Amar Ouchelli as head of the 4th subcommittee, praising Algeria's active role within ICCAT. This achievement, endorsed by Algerian diplomacy, will reinforce the country's food security and raise its income from bluefin tuna exports.
