Bluefin tuna fishing: Algeria's quota increased by 23 tonnes

The Ministry of Fisheries is preparing to launch the 2024 bluefin tuna fishing season, which will begin on 26 May and end on 1 July. The main feature of this campaign will be the increase in Algeria's quota as compensation for 2023.

Amar Ouchelli, the Ministry's Deputy Director for Large-scale and Specialised Fishing, told us on Tuesday that the Ministry had begun preparations by issuing a call for entries for participation in the campaign. "In accordance with the ministerial decree of 24 February 2022 laying down the conditions for bluefin tuna fishing by vessels flying the national flag, applications for participation are being submitted to the fisheries and aquaculture directorates of the coastal wilayas," he said. The ministerial committee will meet to draw up the final list of vessels taking part in the campaign and set individual quotas for each vessel.

After pointing out that Algeria's quota had been set by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) at 2,023 tonnes for 2023, 2024 and 2025, the official said that the quota would be 2,046 tonnes for 2024, after requesting an adjustment of 23 tonnes. The decision was taken at a meeting of the 2nd Sub-Commission of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), held recently in Madrid (Spain).

"For the first time, Algeria has registered an Algerian bluefin tuna fattening farm in the ICAAT register", announced the official, before pointing out that work on the farm could be launched once it had been registered.
