Minister Youcef Cherfa announced that the public dairy project in Algiers, now 95% complete, will be operational by March, in time for Ramadan, to improve the supply of subsidised milk. Two other plants will open soon: a private dairy in Bordj Badji Mokhtar and a public one in Bouira, with capacities of 11,200 and 250,000 litres per day respectively.

The subsidized milk distribution network is being reorganized to counter shortages, increasing milk powder quotas from 15,000 to 21,000 tons/ month. A partnership project between the National Investment Fund and the Qatari company Baladna in the wilaya of Adrar aims to produce milk powder and infant milk, covering 50% of national needs, with an investment of USD 3.5 billion and 5,000 direct jobs creation.

The minister also highlighted efforts to increase self-sufficiency in durum wheat and barley by 2025-2026 by expanding irrigated crops in the south. In this context, the Italian company Best Food's project will produce cereals and pulses on 36,000 hectares in Timimoun, with the first harvests due to begin in December 2024.
