The reform of Algeria's port system is taking shape through modernisation efforts aimed at bringing infrastructure up to international standards. The port of Oran is acquiring new equipment and cranes to enhance cargo handling, while the Wilaya of Skikda is developing a terminal capable of handling 600,000 containers per year. The government has also ordered seven modern tugboats to strengthen logistics. In addition to equipment, the overhaul of the maritime code provides for the creation of a national port authority responsible for harmonising decisions and digitising processes. The aim is to reduce costs, increase competitiveness, and support non-hydrocarbon exports. Expansion projects in Annaba, Djendjen, and Skikda are set to increase capacity and consolidate the role of Algerian ports on regional shipping routes.
