Speaking on the panel, the Wali of Annaba, Abdelkader Djellaoui, who represented Algeria at this event held from 9 to 11 October, underlined the importance of dialogue and the exchange of ideas and proposals for solutions adapted to urban challenges, highlighting the strategies of the various national programmes launched by the President of the Republic, Mr Abdelmadjid Tebboune, with a particular focus on priority sectors such as employment, housing, transport, services, waste management and energy consumption.
Mr Djellaoui highlighted Algeria's efforts in the housing sector, with more than two million housing units to be built by 2024 and a similar target in the five-year programme for 2025-2029.
In this context, he underlined the social impact of the housing sector, which contributes to the eradication of poverty, the creation of jobs and the promotion of investment in the construction sector, specifying that the materials needed for production are produced locally and at competitive prices, thanks to reduced energy costs and a skilled workforce trained locally in vocational training centres.
These centres welcome unemployed people who receive unemployment benefits, set up by the government during training, particularly in the construction sector.
During the interactive discussion, Mr Djellaoui also pointed out that new job opportunities are being created thanks to economic development, the construction of port and railway infrastructure and mega-projects, in particular, the phosphate project launched by the President of the Republic, which is helping to create jobs.
Environmental strategies such as waste management and the promotion of a green economy were also highlighted by Mr Djellaoui, as were efforts to develop renewable energy and hydrogen.
He also focused on the digitalisation of sectors in Algeria, the energy transition and the promotion of innovation through the creation of start-ups, contributing to reducing unemployment and economic development by calling for cooperation for a better urban future.
Finally, Mr Djellaoui called for increased cooperation between cities in the North and South through twinning to share solutions adapted to local realities and to address global climatic and socio-economic challenges.
Initiated in 2016, the Onudi “Bridge for Cities” forum aims to promote the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in cities.
