Photovoltaics at the service of the national economy
Photovoltaic technology can help the national economy, according to participants at a study day organized on Tuesday in Algiers by Green Energy Cluster Algeria.
A study day on photovoltaic solutions for the economic sector highlighted the progress made by Algeria's renewable energy program. The event presented solutions developed by players, explored the commercial and industrial photovoltaic market, and discussed the adaptation of the regulatory framework.
Farida Barka, a member of Algeria's Green Energy Cluster, highlighted the successful launch of 3,200 MWp of renewable electricity in 2023, made possible by a public investment of DZD 3,000 billion. She also advocated an energy model combining large-scale solar power plants and decentralized photovoltaic installations on the roofs of factories, buildings or farms.
The Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, Noureddine Yassa, reiterated the strategic importance of developing renewable energies for the country's economic diversification and energy security. He announced the creation of 20 new solar power plants, totalling 15,000 MW, with a local integration rate of 35%. A 200 MW plant will also be built in Tindouf to support the operation of the Gara Djebilet mine.
The organizers highlighted the potential of the photovoltaic market in the economic sector, estimating that covering 30% of the country's energy consumption could generate a market of 6 to 7 GWp. The Green Energy Cluster Algeria has already submitted a report with recommendations to support this transition.
The one-day event enabled participants to discuss the innovations and solutions needed to develop photovoltaics in industry, the tertiary sector and agriculture, thereby contributing to the energy transition and the reduction of Algeria's carbon footprint.
